Attorney Daniel  Mooers has been deeply involved in his community of South Portland and in Greater Portland charities for the past 35 years. Mr. Mooers has served as a member of the South Portland Urban Renewal Authority and, later, as a member of the Civil Service Commission. In 1979 he received the "City Council Award" for service to the South Portland community. Mr. Mooers also has served on the Board of Visitors for the Maine Mens' Correctional Center. From 1971 to 1978 Mr. Mooers served as an incorporator, founding Director and Clerk of the Susan B. Curtis Foundation and also served for many years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Samantha Smith Foundation. He has also served as a director of the Downeast Chapter, National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Today he is regularly found working as a volunteer at a local "soup kitchen" and raising funds for local charities.

 

Since 1970 Mr. Mooers also has been actively involved in the charitable and humanitarian endeavors of Rotary International. Mr. Mooers joined Rotary in 1970 and served his club of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth as the President and Secretary, and in many capacities in his Rotary district. He was the first District Governor of District 778 in 1990-91 and subsequently served as chairman of his District's Budget and Finance Committee, Foundation Committee and Nominating Committee. He was his district's representative to the1992 R.I. Council on Legislation, and was appointed twice by the President of Rotary International as Group Discussion Leader at Rotary's International Assembly. He also served as a member of the1992 Convention Credentials Committee, and as the R.I. Coordinator of the 1993 President's Salute to Rotary, World Fellowship Activities. He has served R.I. and The Rotary Foundation as the Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator, USCB Zones 6, 8 & 12 (1992-94), and as a Presidential Information Counselor (1992-94).

Mr. Mooers was elected in 1993 as a Director of Rotary International representing the northeast United States and he served in that capacity for two years in 1994-96.  During the Rotary year 1994-95, he served as Liaison Director to the U.S.A. National PolioPlus Committee, the Council on Legislation Background Committee and the Licensing, Marketing and Sponsorship Committee. Selected as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the R.I. Board of Directors for the Rotary year 1995-96, Mr. Mooers also served during that year as a member of the Joint Committee of the Foundation Trustees and the Board, and as Liaison Director to the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, the Council on Legislation Study Committee, the Permanent Fund Leadership Team and the 2005 Centennial Convention Exploration Committee. He also served as a member of the President's special committee on the use of technology (1995-96). Following his term as an RI Director, Mr. Mooers served twice as a  member of the Rotary World President's Advisory Committee (1996-97 and 2001-02), as a member of the Council on Legislation Study Committee (1996-98), as a member of the Nominating Committee for RI President (1998), as Chair and a member of the RI Constitution and Bylaws Committee (2000-2003), as Chair and member of the RI Election Review Committee (2003-06), as advisor to the Committee to Study the Structure of The Rotary Foundation (1996-98) and to the 2002 RI Convention Committee. From December, 1999 to March 2002, Mr. Mooers served as the Aide to the President of Rotary International.

Attorney Mooers is a recipient of Rotary International's highest recognition, the "Rotary Service Above Self" award, and he has received The Rotary Foundation Trustees' Citation for Meritorious Service and the Foundation's highest honor, the Trustees' Distinguished Service Award. He has been a featured speaker at numerous District Assemblies, PETS, District Conferences, Zone Institutes, Rotary Foundation Seminars, Presidential Peace Conferences and other Rotary functions throughout the world, having completed Rotary assignments in more than 30 countries. He has worked in and inspected projects of The Rotary Foundation in various countries, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Togo, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Mexico and Vanautu. Mr. Mooers also served as a Rotary Foundation Volunteer in 1997, completing a two month assignment in Novosibirsk, Siberia, Russia working with and counseling emerging non-profit organizations. He and his wife most recently served as volunteers in Zimbabwe.
